L’ayatollah Raisi, 63 anni, era considerato un ultraconservatore ed è stato il candidato appoggiato dalla Guida Suprema, Ali Khamenei, nelle presidenziali del 2021, quando ai rivali principali fu impedito di candidarsi. Con la presidenza di Raisi, tutti i rami del potere in Iran sono finiti sotto il controllo delle fazioni estremiste anti-occidentali, fedeli a Khamenei, e si è intensificata la repressione del dissenso.
